In its fourth year, SX2023 is organised by five prominent sustainability businesses - Thai Beverage Public Company Ltd, Frasers Property Company Ltd, PTT Global Chemical Public Company Ltd, SCG (Siam Cement Group) Public Company Ltd, and Thai Union Group Public Company Ltd. The largest sustainability exposition in ASEAN, the Expo aims to educate and raise the public's awareness of sustainable development. It also featured exhibitions of sustainable innovations, knowledge-sharing sessions, interactive exchanges, a sustainable marketplace, and youth engagement programme. This year, it ran under the theme “Good Balance, Better World”.
Hugh was on the panel titled “Metropolitan Management for Quality of Life”, together with Chadchart Sittipunt, Governor of Bangkok, and H.E. Anna Jakenberg Brinck, Deputy Head of Mission, Embassy of Sweden.
He highlighted two challenges that cities of the future would face – namely, achieving inclusive growth in our cities and addressing climate change. He then shared on some of Singapore’s efforts to manage these challenges, such as Singapore’s efforts to ensure that housing typologies are tailored to the needs of our aging population. For example, Community Care Apartments, senior-friendly housing is paired with personalised care services such as health checks, 24-hour emergency response, meal and laundry services and social programming such as activities at the communal spaces. This better enables seniors in Singapore to age independently within the community. Hugh also spoke about Singapore’s efforts to protect our coastline and enhance flood resilience, through nature-based solutions like the mangroves in Pulau Tekong, and research-based approaches helmed by Singapore government agencies like the Public Utilities Board.
